The Temple of Hatshepsut, a famous female ruler of Egypt who posed as a male to gain the throne, is magnificent. Look out for unique scenes on the temple walls depicting her expedition to Somalia.
Despite the name, the Valley of the Queens houses the tombs of ancient pharaohs’ wives, their children and some high officials. Four of the around 70 graves are currently open: the tombs of Titi, Nefertari, Titi, Amenherkhepshef, and Khaemwaset. Please note there is an extra charge to visit Nefertari’s tomb.
Here, wonder at the two giant statues of the New Kingdom pharaoh Amenhotep III, and the Colossi of Memnon, towering 59 feet (18 meters), making the perfect introduction to the grandeurs of Luxor’s West Bank. Each statue weighs around 1,100 tons, once guarding the entrance to a funerary temple which archaeologists continue to excavate today.
