Most journeys to Egypt begin and end in Cairo. However, a mere three-hour drive will bring you to astounding Alexandria.
The city was founded by Alexander the Great in 334 B.C., remaining the capital of Egypt for around 1,000 years. Now, it is the second largest city and the biggest seaport in Egypt.
So, discover the delights of Alexandria on this daytrip from Cairo. Traveling in an air-conditioned minivan with your own private tour-guide, uncover the Greco-Roman origins of this beautiful, laid-back Mediterranean city and see its stunning highlights. Descend into Kom El-Shoqafa’s eerie Roman catacombs, wonder at the Roman Pompey’s Pillar, and experience the awe-inspiring contemporary library – “a spectacular, disc-shaped building that echoes its forerunner, the once-great ancient Library of Alexandria”. Included is a flexible, personalized itinerary and a delicious seafood lunch.
The catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa were one of the World’s Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages.
This location presents a collection of Alexandrian tombs, statues and archaeological objects of the Pharaonic funeral cult, showcasing early Imperial Roman and Hellenistic influences. Some statues are Egyptian in style, yet with Roman hair styles and clothes. A circular staircase leads down to the tombs tunneled into the bedrock during the Antonine emperor era (second century AD). These were then used as burial chambers from the 2nd to the 4th centuries, before being rediscovered in 1900 when a donkey accidentally fell into the access shaft. To date, three sarcophagi have been discovered.
